ANTHONY TRAN is a Los Angeles based Costume Designer. With a diverse body of work ranging from contemporary, period to sci-fi, he is well versed in designing for all genres/mediums. Recent credits include designing the upcoming season of STAR TREK: DISCOVERY (Paramount+) and the first season of HOW I MET YOUR FATHER (Hulu/20th TV).

Born in Southern California to Vietnamese immigrants, Anthony grew up drawing on whatever scrap paper he could find. A graduate of the UCLA School of Theater, Film, and Television and Department of Art History, he started his career designing for the stage. Theater work includes the critically acclaimed world premiere of VIETGONE (Manhattan Theatre Club/South Coast Rep) and LA CAGE AUX FOLLES (LA Dramatic Critics Circle Best Costume Design nominee).

His work in film and television started as the Costume Design Assistant on James Wan’s INSIDIOUS and Steven Soderbergh’s MAGIC MIKE. As an Assistant Costume Designer, credits include Judd Apatow’s LOVE (Netflix) and STAR TREK: PICARD (CBS All Access).

He transitioned to designing independent films including EXCISION (Sundance Premiere) and BAD MILO! (SXSW Premiere) before working with studios like Disney, where his work on TEEN BEACH spawned a line of Halloween costumes. He is a member of the Costume Designers Guild.

Coming from a background in art history and museum studies, Anthony approaches costume design as an anthropologist— dissecting the script and unearthing the characters. Working with producers, directors, and actors, his process is collaborative. His work seeks to marry style and story— always seeking to find the unique in everything.
